Abstract
The aim of the Fiat Lux Scholars Program at the University of California, Merced is to provide assistance and support to first generation, income eligible students in order to ensure successful completion of their degree. The program and program staff offers a structured system of resources and intrusive advising for the students. This workshop will address the benefits of secondary advising along with the structure of the program. We will describe program components including workshop requirements, a living-learning community, Faculty Receptions and peer interactions.
Speaker Biography
Rosa Campos
Rosa is the Coordinator for the Fiat Lux Scholars Program at the University of California Merced and has been for the past 4 years. She received her M.S. in Counseling from Fresno State.
Manpreet Dola
Manpreet is a Counselor for the Fiat Lux Scholars Program. She received her M.A. in Education from California State University Stanislaus.
Through the program, both Rosa and Manpreet are currently working with first-generation, income eligible students to help ease their transition from high school to college in order successfully graduate from the university system within the expected (four-year) time frame.
