Graduate Outreach and Diversity Recruiting

Abstract

With the affect of diminishing budgets, the UCLA Chemistry and Biochemistry Graduate Student Affairs Office has taken a local approach with outreach efforts. Partnering with Graduate Division, the GSAO has hosted various visitations for underrepresented minorities. At these events, local resources are utilized by incorporating student organizations, tours, and student panels that include diversity fellowship recipients such as Eugene Cota-Robles fellows. In Fall 2014, the GSAO hosted its inaugural Outreach and Diversity Day. Students from regional CSU campuses were invited to attend; specifically, members of organizations that promote diversity such as Minority Biomedical Research Support (MBRS), Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC), Minority Opportunities in Research (MORE), and Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE). This workshop will explore diversity recruiting events including Outreach and Diversity Day, budgets, and projects for future implementation. Advisors will be encouraged to seek creative methods for recruiting diverse populations.
